Charles Roy Bowen, 89, of Council Grove, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at Diversicare of Council Grove surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 12, 1932, in Flandreau, South Dakota, the son of Roy and Geraldine (Millard) Bowen.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, March 19th, 2022, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Council Grove, with Father Seiler, officiating. Burial will follow at the Catholic Cemetery in Council Grove. Rosary/vigil will be at 7:00 PM, Friday, March 18th, 2022, at St. Rose followed by a visitation in the parish hall.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He grew up on a farm near Flandreau which established his love of gardening and farming. He attended Flandreau schools and enjoyed playing baseball. He enlisted in the Army and served in Germany as a young adult. While serving he had the opportunity to play baseball all over Germany which he often fondly recalled. Charles was skilled with his hands and did carpentry and construction while raising his family. In search of warmer weather and work, Charles and his wife relocated to Council Grove, Kansas. In his spare time, he was active in coaching boys little league baseball in Council Grove and also established the girls softball program. In later years he enjoyed working beside his wife in their gardening/produce stand for many years. His other hobbies included fishing, hunting, and leisurely drives around the community. Charles was a faithful follower of the Lord, serving as an usher at St. Rose and he participated in the Knights of Columbus.
He was married to Darlene Baumann at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Elkton, South Dakota on July 15, 1954. He is preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Tamara Bowen; a son, Tony Bowen; his parents; his stepfather, Al Otto; a brother, Bernie Bowen; and a sister Charlotte (Bowen) Snow.
He is survived by his son, Marc and wife Becky; daughter, Paula Ross; son, Kenny; daughter, Laurie Kohler and husband Wayne; daughter, Dawn Wecker; son, Chris; daughter, Jennifer Steere-Offermann and husband Roger; daughter, Kathy Hannah and husband Joe, and grandchildren, Nathan Bowen, Cole Bowen, Tanner Bowen; Wade and Jessica (Bowen) Olsen, Dustin and Nicole Bowen; Johnny Ross and Jessie Worrell, Matt and Chanell Ross; Lucas Kohler, Logan Kohler; Kenley and Lindsey Hickman, Chelsey and Justin Schmidt, Mitchell Wecker and Chelsea Watson; Jon and Shelby (Bowen) Stohs, Kyle Bowen and Heather Theurer, and Emilee (Bowen) Hager; Lane and Erinn (Steere) Grist, Evan Steere, Micah and Abby Price-Offermann, Jacob and Beth Offermann, Adam Offermann; and Joseph and Mary Morgan Morris; numerous great grandchildren, Benjamin, Jaxson, Brayden, Hayley, Leyton, Colt, Brooks, Greyson, Brooklyn, Aubree, Keaton, Marlee, Kayden, Jace, Blair, Easton, Bennett, Ava, Paisley, Halen, Declan, and Maddyn. He is also survived by a sister, Kathi Olson; a sister-in-law, Joann Bowen, and several beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
