Laverne Lois Falk, age 98, passed away on February 11, 2025, at the Council Grove Assisted Living. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and enduring faith in Christ that will be cherished by her family and friends for generations to come.
Laverne was born December 23, 1926, on the family farm north of McFarland, Kansas. She was one of six daughters born to Henry and Emma (Weith) Mathies. Laverne received the rite of Holy Baptism as an infant, at Trinity Lutheran Church in McFarland. She later confirmed her faith in her Lord and Savior by rite of confirmation on June 30,1940 at Trinity. Laverne’s faith guided her throughout her life, and her love for the Lord could be seen in her role as a wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Laverne met her future husband, Harold Falk at a joint Lutheran youth meeting (Walther League), between Alta Vista and McFarland. The two were married on June 2, 1946 at a noon ceremony after church. They made their home on the Falk family farm near Alta Vista. Together, they raised six children, Deloris, Linda, Mary, Melvin, Alan, and Kristie, in a home filled with love, and an emphasis on the importance of family. In 1995, they moved to Council Grove after retiring and selling the family farm. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage before Harold’s passing in 2011.
Laverne was well known for her baking and cooking skills, especially her pies! She lovingly shared these skills with her children and many of her grandchildren. She served as a food’s leader for many years, sharing her knowledge with the youth, when her children were involved in 4-H. Laverne also enjoyed making quilts. It was not unusual to have a quilt set up in the family room so she could work on it when time allowed. She also spent many hours with her sisters at their own quilting bees, working on each other’s quilts.
Laverne was a member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she remained active until her health declined. She was a member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, and taught Sunday School for over 20 years.
Laverne will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. Her memory will be carried in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Her legacy of love, kindness, and love for Christ will continue to guide and inspire her family for generations to come.
Laverne was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, son-in law, Metford Mountford, granddaughter-in-law, Julie Hayes, and sisters, Esther Stuewe, Lillie Neff, Ella Theel, and Loma Stuewe. Laverne is survived by her children: Deloris Syring (Garold), of Washington, Kansas, Linda Montgomery, of Alta Vista, Mary Mountford, of Manvel, Texas, Melvin Falk (Koko), of Lees Summit, Missouri, Alan Falk (Deb), of Peoria, Arizona, and Kristie Hayes (Brad), of Council Grove. She also is survived by 16 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. Laverne is also survived by her sister, Inez Theel of Alma.
Funeral services will be at St Paul Lutheran Church, Alta Vista on February 21, 2025 at 11 am. Burial will be at Templin Cemetery. Family will be at the church at 10 am, prior to the service, to visit with friends and family. Lunch will be served after returning from the cemetery. All are welcome.
