Michael Dale Stegman

Michael Dale Stegman, affectionately known as Weas/Weasel, 73, died at his home in Council Grove, Kansas on July 25, 2024. He was born in Orlando, Florida on February 10, 1951. Mike grew up in Bucklin, Kansas after moving there with his family in 1959 from Wichita, Kansas. He learned the value of a hard day’s work on the family farm working alongside his dad and siblings. Agriculture was a big part of his life, and he settled in and thrived working with farmers at East Kansas Chemical. He made many good friendships through those years with his customers and the vendors of the products. He was a good salesman and loved to visit with people.

During junior and high school at Bucklin, Mike was part of some very successful sports teams, especially excelling as running back on the football field. Those years produced a compiled record of 44-1-1. He graduated from Bucklin High School in 1969.

Mike worked a variety of jobs over the years that took him from Bucklin to Dodge City, Kansas, Campbell, CA, San Jose, CA, Rockport, Missouri and lastly Kingsdown, Kansas. He retired in 2018 after years of managing the East Kansas Chemical plant in Kingsdown, Kansas. After retirement, he then moved to Council Grove to enjoy life on the lake. Mike enjoyed fishing, taking many trips over the years with friends, playing golf anywhere and a good nap!

Survivors include his children; Shanna Stegman, Stanton, California and Joseph Stegman, Manhattan, Kansas, grandchildren; Jada Stegman and Matthew Stegman of Stanton, California, his brother; Jim (Nancy) Stegman, Bucklin, Kansas, half-brother, Stan Bogdanovecz, Mount Hope, Kansas, his sisters; Sue (Rob) Scott, Kim (Stan) Ellis both of Bucklin, Kansas and Cyndi Tilley, Enid Oklahoma. Mike’s nephews and nieces were especially close to him and they reciprocated a special love. He also held a special place in the hearts of many.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin (Shorty) and Marilyn Gustin Stegman, his brother, Bryan Stegman, his sisters Stephanie Staats and Linda Genosky.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life service will be held later and a date to be announced. The family suggests a memorial in Mike’s name to the Bucklin High School Athletic Department. Checks can be made to BHS Athletic Department/Mike Stegman Memorial and sent to the School at PO Box 8, Bucklin, KS 67834.
